The Problem With Looking For Some Higher Purpose To Life
Updated: Apr 18, 2022
We all think that we are born for some higher purpose and we’re on a mission to find it before time runs out. During this process of realisation we start to explore what our higher purpose is and most of the time we just end up going around in circles ending up at the same starting point with no answer.
Another word for a higher purpose is ‘life purpose’ we all want to celebrate that we have found this but what does it really mean.
I recently met an ENT consultant and asked him the question do you enjoy what you do? He answered ‘yes I do’
He then carried on asking himself a number of questions and answering them out aloud:
Q: Will I always do this
A: Yes
Q: If I had my time again would I train in the same area of specialty
A: Yes
Q: Is there anything else I’d rather be doing
A: No
I found this rather interesting I only asked 1 question and this triggered a number of other related questions for him.
Here’s the truth. We exist on this earth for some undetermined period of time. During this time we do things. Some of which seem more important to us then other things, and we do some things that when we reflect back were really unimportant but seemed important at the time.
It is those important things that even when we reflect back remain important which give our life meaning, purpose, and happiness.
So when people say, “What should I do with my life?” or “What is my life purpose?” and they can’t find the answer they should reframe the question to “What can I do with the time that is important to me?”
If I asked you the same question that I asked the ENT consultant what would be your answers?
DM me if you are struggling to answer the questions or if your responses are negative.
