Self Actualisation

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

During the pandemic with lockdowns, working from home, etc. I hear many clients saying how they have had time to reflect and focus on what is really important in their life.

The top 6 things are:

  • Family is really important

  • Having a better work life balance

  • Hybrid working i.e. having 1-2 days in the office and the rest working from home

  • I need to be doing something different

  • I don’t enjoy my work

  • I need a change

When my clients tell me these things I can really relate because that’s how I felt and I’m sure that’s most of you will also be able to relate.

To put it in Maslow’s language as humans we have 5 hierarchies of needs often depicted as a pyramid:

What I’ve found working with clients

Most clients have been below the blue line, a point at which there has been a lack of motivation. What’s really interesting is that a high percentage of clients are not clear on what needs to change in their life for them to reach the top of the pyramid. They have been going around in circles trying to figure this out on their own.

If you find yourself in this position you don’t have to figure this out for yourself.

A few tips of what you can do

  1. When we talk quite often we don’t even realise what we’ve said and that’s where our friends, colleagues and family come in. Go and talk to the people around you and ask them what they think you enjoy, what they think you most complain about.

  2. Make a note of their responses.

  3. Highlight the common themes.

  4. Write out the common themes on a separate piece of paper.

  5. Read these out aloud to yourself.

  6. Set your timer for 10 minutes

  7. Sit back and take three deep breathes in and on the third exhale close your eyes

  8. Repeat the common themes to yourself out aloud

  9. Focus on the feelings you get when thinking and saying these themes

  10. Once the timer is up open your eyes and write down any actions that came up during your 10 minutes.

By doing this exercise you’ll take the first step and start moving up the pyramid towards self-actualization.
